Growing up, my brother and I wore out our Pinocchio tape to its limits, and to be honest, it's one weird film, with many a moment that could be nightmare-inducing to a young child. To become a 'real' boy, he has to navigate the world with truth, bravery and unselfishness alongside his temporary conscience - vagabond Jiminy Cricket. Lonely woodcarver Gepetto makes a wish upon a star, bringing his boy puppet to life. This version follows the original story pretty closely, with a few tweaks to give it a fresh new coat and a more modern message for Generation Alpha kids. It can comfortably entertain its intended audience without too much hullabaloo. With no Disney Princess and a less avaricious fanbase, the stakes are low for this straight-to-streaming Italian fable. Out of all the ones that came before, remaking Pinocchio is probably one of the easier classics to tackle. In the realm of the Mighty Mouse, the task is even more difficult, veering between outright cash grabs and finding new light in old tales while staying true to the original heart.
Those who make live-action remakes of beloved animations tread a difficult path, reinterpreting many audiences' favourite childhood memories for new generations to enjoy. A puppet is brought to life by a fairy, who assigns him to lead a virtuous life in order to become a real boy.
